Volunteer Opportunities at Second Harvest

  • We welcome group opportunities in our distribution center. Shifts are Monday-Saturday from 8:30-11:30 am and 12:30-3:30 pm. Starting May 2023, we have opened up Spring & Summer evening shifts every Tuesday from 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm.
  • We can accommodate up to 21 volunteers. You may sign up directly at SignUp Genius or contact our Volunteer Service Coordinator, at 608-216-7214.
  • Interested in a date not yet scheduled? No worries, we would be delighted to help you schedule your group in advance.
  • Did you enjoy your shift at Second Harvest with a group? If so, consider becoming a regular volunteer by completing the individual volunteer application linked here.
  • We plan our days and projects around the number of volunteers we expect to arrive at our shifts, so please let volunteers@shfbmadison.org know if the number of volunteers is subject to change ahead of time.
  • Volunteering allows us to learn more about our community while also creating meaningful connections and relationships. At Second Harvest we welcome individual volunteers to grow and foster relationships with us and the community.   • We collaborate with various academic institutions and programs through internships and service-learning courses. If you are interested in completing an internship at Second Harvest, please complete this inquiry form.

Current Volunteer Opportunities- Mobile Pantries

  • Mobile pantry distributions provide direct access to communities in our service area that are limited on local resources and grocers.
  • During a mobile pantry distribution you will direct traffic and/or load food into guest’s vehicles.
  • Volunteer shifts are outside and require long periods of standing. Volunteers should be able to lift approx. 35 lbs.

Second Harvest Allied Dunn Marsh Mobile Pantry
Where: 4619 Jenewein Rd next to the Boy’s & Girls Club
When: Pantry will be the 2nd and 4th Friday of each month at 3 p.m.

Rimrock Route Mobile Food Pantry
Where: Highland Manor Storm Shelter, 10 Manor Drive, 10:30 to 11:00 am
Seven Oaks Apartments, 1108 Moorland Rd, 11:30 to Noon
Southdale Park , 200 Deer Valley Rd, 12:30 to 1:30 pm
When: Every 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month

  • We are happy to verify court-ordered service hours as well as provide verification of hours for school/internship programs. We are able to accommodate different types of verification, but we do ask that you allow for a one-week window for verification to be completed.
  • Please reach out to us at volunteers@shfbmadison.org once you sign up for a volunteer shift to discuss verification options.
  • Please check back for seasonal volunteer opportunities! We will also post volunteer appreciation events (when acceptable with current social distance practices) below.
  • Typically, volunteers will be recruited 4-6 weeks in advance of the event. If you would like to volunteer for any of these opportunities, contact our Volunteer Services Coordinator at 608-216-7214.
