Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin announced today that Ellen Carlson, Executive Director of Middleton Outreach Ministry (MOM), and Les McPhearson, President of Dean Health Plan (DHP) have joined the Board of Directors for the organization.

“We are excited and honored that these two amazing people have agreed to add their wisdom, insights, and passion for ending hunger to our already exceptional list of Board of Directors,” said Michelle Orge, president & CEO of Second Harvest Foodbank. “Thanks in part to the guidance provided by our Board of Directors, Second Harvest will continue to meet the challenges we face on the road to ending hunger in our community.”

New Board Member Ellen CarlsonMs. Carlson has worked at MOM in a variety of positions since 2002.  Originally from Shoreview, MN, she is a graduate of the UW Madison and has been involved as a volunteer in many organizations and community-related activities throughout her time in Madison, in areas such as STEM, the arts, youth education, and advocacy.  She has been honored as an InBusiness 40 under 40, a BRAVA Woman To Watch, and received a Governor's Service Award in 2019.

"As the Executive Director of an organization that works closely with Second Harvest Foodbank to provide needed nutritious resources to our community, I'm excited about the opportunity to serve on the Board, providing agency insight where I can, and also working with the incredible Second Harvest team to strengthen the food system,” said Carlson.

New Board Member Les McPhearsonMr. McPhearson is responsible for ensuring the continued growth and successful operations of DHP, including development and implementation of strategic plans, the successful introduction of new products and services, membership growth, operational, financial, and service excellence, and continued improvements in clinical quality. With almost 500,000 members, Dean Health Plan is one of the largest and most diversified HMOs in the Midwest. His professional experience includes progressive leadership roles with Humana, Florida Blue, Trustmark, and HealthSmart in the insurance industry and as CEO of United Benefit Advisors, one of the nation’s largest independent health insurance broker trade associations. Additionally, he served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy.

Together, they join other community and business leaders who are dedicated to helping Second Harvest achieve its vision of making sure everyone in our community has enough nutritious food to thrive.
