“We are privileged to serve as Honorary Co-Chairs for this essential campaign. Second Harvest is an amazing organization that helps families, children, and seniors who are going through a difficult time. Through this campaign, Second Harvest will have even greater capacity to provide fresh food and nutritious and healthy meals to those in need. Second Harvest makes our community a better place and this project will help them have an even greater impact!” Steve & Nicki Stricker
The purpose of the Food. Health. Hope. Campaign is to increase our ability to provide more nutritious fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and healthy protein-rich frozen food to the clients we serve through our partner agencies. Our hope is to help reduce the long-term negative health impacts of food insecurity.
Our friends and neighbors who struggle with hunger often have to make some very tough choices to make ends meet. One of the more popular ways to make their limited resources stretch is to rely on inexpensive, but unhealthy food in order to put food on their table. This leads to higher rates of obesity, diabetes, and high cholesterol in general; and attention deficits and behavioral problems in kids. To do our part to reduce these negative health impacts we needed to make some changes. We needed to find ways to increase our ability to provide more healthy and nutritious fresh and frozen product to those who rely on Second Harvest and our partner agencies to make ends meet.
After years of considering multiple options for ways to achieve our goal, we embarked on the first phase of the Food. Health. Hope. Campaign, which included quietly reaching out to potential supporters of a capital fundraising effort, while simultaneously making necessary changes to both our facility and the way we did things. In February of 2017 we were able to celebrate that - thanks to many generous supporters - we were able to meet our $2 million capital fundraising goal, AND that all primary construction activities had been completed. Changes to the facility included:
- Increased freezer capacity by 200% by adding on to the existing warehouse
- Increased cooler capacity by 33% by expanding and combining existing coolers into one unit
- Doubled the number of shipping/receiving bays (went from 4 to 8)
- Increased the number of volunteer food handling rooms from two to three
- Improved warehouse traffic flow to increase the efficiency of the food handling process from intake to delivery
WHERE YOU COME IN
Despite the fact that the fundraising efforts to cover the construction expenses were successful, there will be ongoing costs to bring in, store, and send out the increased volume of fresh and frozen product to the families, kids, and seniors in southwestern Wisconsin facing hunger.
That's where you come in!
Our goal for the second phase of the Food. Health. Hope. Campaign is to raise $200,000 to help cover the ongoing costs that will allow us to maximize the efficiency of our newly expanded facility. Your gift will make a difference in the lives of thousands of people struggling with hunger right here in southwestern Wisconsin.
"One of the main reasons we support this campaign is that it links food access very strategically with medical care, poverty solutions and academic achievement. We see it as a very enlightened, holistic approach to hunger --- a big step forward for our community." Steve Goldberg, CUNA Mutual Group Foundation
Normally for every $1 you give, we can provide 3 meals, but now thanks to a generous donor who will match the first $50,000 donated during this phase of the campaign, every $1 you give can provide 6 meals! Your gift can make twice the impact right now. Consider a gift to the Food. Health. Hope. Campaign.
