Sources of Food/Funds

FOOD:
Over 80 manufacturers, wholesalers, distributors and retailers support Second Harvest through their generous food donations. These donations consist primarily of surplus and unsaleable grocery products that might otherwise go to waste. Last fiscal year, these donations totaled over over 6 million pounds of food and were distributed by the case to our participating agencies.

Individual and community food drives also helped keep the Second Harvest warehouse full last year. These donations are especially valuable in meeting the needs of agency programs that need quantities smaller than a case of product.

Most charitable food programs make regular visits to Second Harvest's Madison warehouse to select the food that they need. Last year, nearly 6 million pounds of grocery items were distributed to our network of over 400 charitable food programs (food pantries, shelters, meal sites and Kids Cafes). This network of charitable programs provides food assistance to more than 77,000 people in need in southern Wisconsin each year.

FUNDING:
Second Harvest receives no state or federal funding. Funding sources for the collection, transportation, storage and distribution of food include individual and corporate contributions, grants, special events and a shared maintenance fee of 18 cents per pound of food contributed by agencies. The food bank is also a United Way participating agency.
