Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin has been located at our current address, 2802 Dairy Drive in the World Dairy Center in Madison, since 1996. The 25,000-square foot office/warehouse, built on land donated by William T. Graham, distributed more than 280,000 pounds of food in its first year. Prior to this, the Foodbank was located at 919 Stewart St. in Madison from 1986-1996.By 2005, Second Harvest Foodbank’s service to 16 southwestern Wisconsin counties was outpacing the capabilities of our facility. We undertook a Build a Future To End Hunger warehouse expansion in 2007 that more than doubled our warehouse and office space. The 42,000-square foot warehouse holds about one million pounds of food with an average of more than 31,000 pounds of food each day being brought in, processed as needed and going back out to our partner agencies for families and individuals struggling with hunger.Named the “Mike McKinney Distribution Center” after the NBC15 Share Your Holidays founder, this larger facility space has improved efficiency in Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin’s daily operations. All frozen, refrigerated and non-perishable food is stocked on-site, eliminating off-site overflow storage costs. The expanded loading dock provides more access to pick up and delivery vehicles. And the Foodbank’s Clean Rooms are three times the size of the old food handling area. By accepting from food industry businesses bulk food donations for sorting and repacking into family-size portions, we are bridging the gap between waste and hunger in southwestern Wisconsin. From July 1, 2010–June 30, 2011, we distributed 8.6 million pounds of food.
